Horizon Eye Centre was the first practice in the United
Kingdom to offer
patients a non-surgicaloption for the
treatment of presbyopia, or the need forreading glasses.
If you have always had good vision and now find yourself over
40 and needing glasses, especially for reading, you may be developing
presbyopia. CK treatment may be an option for you.
Rather than using a surgical procedure with a laser, CK uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to reshape the cornea.
The RF energy is applied to the peripheral portion of the cornea
with a small probe, thinner than a strand of human hair. RF energy
is very safe and is being used in other health care disciplines
for treatment of prostate cancer, back problems and some cardiovascular
procedures.
A laserless procedure to correct the need for reading glasses
The CK procedure takes just a few minutes
and is done using only topical numbing drops. The treatment
results in an increase in corneal curvature and focusing power.
Most patients will notice some immediate improvement in their
near range vision but it can take a few weeks for vision to
totally stabilize. Not everyone will be free from their reading
glasses after treatment, but most are less dependent. A complete
preoperative evaluation is necessary to determine who is a
good candidate for this procedure. The evaluation for Conductive
Keratoplasty is identical to that for any of our laser-based
refractive surgeries.
About the procedure

Because Conductive Keratoplasty is minimally
invasive and extremely precise, the procedure has exhibited very
minimal risk and almost
no side effects. During the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery,
you may experience tearing and some discomfort, including a foreign-body
sensation in the eyes. You may also experience initial slight
over-correction of your vision, which stabilizes during the following
weeks. However, because CK doesn’t cut or remove tissue,
many of the side effects associated with other vision treatment
procedures have not been observed with CK.
CK is not a cure for presbyopia, which is the age-normal change
in the eye that makes it difficult for people to see clearly
up close. If you are nearsighted or have astigmatism and wear
bifocals, CK will not help you. If you are very farsighted and
wear bifocals, CK will also be of little help. CK is best considered
by people with no distance vision problems but who need reading
glasses.
Often, only one eye is treated with CK. This treatment adds
near focusing power to that eye while only very slightly decreasing
distance clarity. This added power can reduce your dependence
on reading glasses.

CK eye treatment is available from our Harley Street London clinic. It is now offered by more than 500 centres across the United States and many more around the world. More than 100,000 procedures have now been performed and with an astonishing safety record. Horizon Eye Centre in London is one of the top 3 CK treatment centres globally. Our medical director Mr. David Allamby was the first surgeon to perform CK for the treatment of reading glasses and is one of the top 3 CK surgeons worldwide. He has performed more that 1000 CK eye procedures.

The most popular use of CK eye correction is the reduction or elimination of the need for reading glasses. If you are over 40 and have previously had good distance vision then you may be an excellent candidate for CK eye treatment at our London clinic. This is achieved through what is known as blended vision. One eye is assisted to focus for reading and blends together with the other eye for distance vision. Because of the special optical properties of the cornea following CK eye correction, more than 90% of people will enjoy the way blended vision can reduce or eliminate their dependence on reading glasses.
This is quite different from the effect called monovision that is achieved with contact lenses. Even if you have been unsuccessful with contact lenses for reading, you may very well be suitable for CK treatment. Horizon Eye Centres have treatmed many such patients successfully.
FDA studies and the worldwide surgical record of more than 100,000 procedures have shown CK treatment to be a safe and effective procedure. CK eye treatment has been described as turning back the clock on your eyes. However, with age the clock keeps on ticking and a booster session may be required some years later.
